Graduate Programs
The Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership (Ed.D.) program develops social justice leaders who are change agents, ethical leaders, and scholar-practitioners. This program offers students a unique opportunity to engage in applied inquiry throughout the program with the deliberate focus on preparing practitioners to lead initiatives and organizations that redress inequities and promote social justice.
The Doctor of Philosophy in Education is a multi-disciplinary research-focused degree anchored in the educational complexities of access, success, and equity that is designed to prepare candidates globally to assume roles as faculty and researchers. The Doctor of Philosophy offers its candidates opportunities to engage in research, college level teaching, and clinical experiences that respond to the regions and the nation’s persistent challenges with educational access and equity in traditionally underserved communities.
The Educational Specialist is an advanced degree that enables the candidate to develop practitioner expertise in psychological, educational, professional and related areas. Candidates hone skills in assessment, consultation, counseling and intervention to prepare to work with children and adolescents, parents, guardians, teachers and other educational professionals in a school setting.
This program leads to a Master of Arts degree in Counseling in Educational Settings and also New Jersey certification in School Counseling. Graduates may work in elementary, middle, and/or secondary school settings, providing student counseling services.
The M.A. in Educational Technology offers students the expertise and proficiencies needed to incorporate the existing and emerging educational technologies into their classroom and school organization.The program is intended for educators and educational leaders who place a high value on successful teaching and learning through the use of educational technology.
The M.A. in Equity, Access, & Success in Education prepares urban educators, community organizers, policymakers, school leaders, and youth-focused change agents to understand the contradictions of current school systems and meaningfully address the educational and broader socioeconomic disparities that many communities too often face.
The Master of Arts in Higher Education is intended for individuals who wish to pursue administrative and student affairs careers at two- or four-year institutions. Graduates of our program are prepared to support a diverse population of students as they journey through the educational landscape of learning and professional development.
The M.A. in Reading Education is nationally accredited by the National Council for Accreditation in Teacher Education in conjunction with the International Literacy Association. Students will develop both a contemporary conceptual framework and effective strategies for guiding literacy development in classroom and clinical environments. The M.A. in School Psychology provides a background in the theories, major knowledge, and methodological procedures in school psychology. This program (or its equivalent) is required for admission into the Educational Specialist (Ed.S.) program. The Master of Arts and Educational Specialist in School Psychology combine to meet the requirements for NJ Department of Education certification in School Psychology.
Focus on studying the educational, psychological and sociological needs of children and youth in our online master's in special education and inclusive practices program. The M.A. STEM Education offers the unique opportunity for students who have undergraduate degrees in the mathematics, engineering, or the sciences to pursue an initial New Jersey teaching certificate in mathematics and/or one of the sciences and a master’s degree simultaneously.

The Master of Science in Teaching (MST): Subject Matter Education in English, Social Studies, Theatre and World Language offers the unique opportunity for graduate students to simultaneously pursue New Jersey teacher certification in English, Social Studies, a World Language (e.g., Spanish, German, American Sign Language, Chinese, etc.), or Theatre and a Master’s degree in Education (MST).
The Master of Science in Teaching (M.S.T.) in Theatre Education program offers students the unique opportunity to pursue an initial New Jersey teaching certificate and a Master’s degree simultaneously. The program is designed to prepare individuals who have undergraduate degrees to be certified P-12 Theatre teachers.
Graduate Certifications
The CAGS in Chief School Administrator is designed to provide students with the course content and internship necessary for the certification from the State of New Jersey. The CAGS also allows students who are unsuccessful in the doctoral program as a result of an inability to pass the Benchmark II (BMII) to be recognized for the successful completion of the program’s core courses.
Designed for candidates who have a master’s degree, a supervisor certificate and five years of full-time experience, this online, flexible Principal Preparation Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study program prepares students to serve as a principal in public schools.
The program prepares professionals to teach literacy to all learners and serve as leaders in supporting their colleagues in the field. The Certificate of Graduate Study (COGS) in Teacher Leadership is designed for teachers who want to develop and hone their leadership skills but wish to remain in the classroom. Candidates become successful mentor/master teachers by utilizing data in instructional and pedagogical decision-making, supporting and delivering job-embedded professional learning, and evaluating programs aimed at improving schooling for all P-12 learners, their families, and the community.
Students who pursue this certificate will deepen their understanding about the complexities and contexts that inform urban educational settings. This knowledge is significant not only because the majority of students in states like New Jersey attend city schools, but also because students of color have since become the majority across all schools in the United States.
Designed for individuals who have previously earned their master’s degree, our online Learning Disabilities Teacher Consultant (LDTC) certification program prepares graduates to collaborate with a child study team to provide research-based instructional strategies to assist students who require additional academic support.
The Graduate Certificate in Student Assistance Coordination is intended for individuals who want to be certified as student assistance coordinators. A Student Assistance Coordinator provides in-school assessment, crisis intervention, and counseling and referral services to any student experiencing personal, family, or peer difficulties.

This program responds to the need for highly qualified teachers prepared to teach content in both the students’ native language and in English to the growing number of Multilingual Learners in schools. Specific objectives emphasize the application of theory to practice, the development of long-range and short-range plans that integrate language and content, the design of appropriate authentic assessment instruments, and the use of technology to research content and instructional techniques.
Graduates of our online TOSD graduate endorsement program will foster an understanding of students with special learning needs, combined with pedagogical skills to accommodate these needs and provide appropriate curriculum modifications when necessary.
Undergraduate Programs & Certifications
The BA in Education with a Concentration in Early Childhood Education prepares candidates for certification to teach children from preschool through third grade. Based on current research, the curriculum aligns with NJPST, NAEYC, NJCCCS, and NJPTLS professional standards and includes: General Education courses, Rowan Experience courses and a Professional Concentration Sequence specific to early childhood.
The B.A. in Education: Health & Physical Education prepares teacher candidates for positions from preschool through high school. This nationally accredited program combines instruction in both Health Education and Physical Education. Successful candidates become dually certified Pre-K-12 Health and Physical Education teachers by the New Jersey State Department of Education.
The Bachelor of Arts, Elementary Education program prepares candidates to make a career of impacting the lives of children, kindergarten through grade 6. Through ample guided field experiences, you will observe, learn from, and be immersed in real classrooms working with professional teachers and students. With a choice of 10 subject-matter areas to choose from, you will graduate with a BA in Education, with a specialization in elementary education (K-6) and a BA in your dual major.
The BA in Inclusive Education prepares future teachers to meet the needs of all students, including those from diverse backgrounds and those with disabilities. Graduates implement content-rich, interdisciplinary experiences using a strengths-based perspective to differentiate instruction for individual learners. They also create learning communities rooted in social justice and culturally relevant pedagogical practices.
The BA in Leadership & Social Innovation prepares students to serve diverse organizations, ranging from startups and nonprofits to government and policy sectors. Students gain an understanding of leadership, organizational design, diversity, and grant acquisition and management. The program culminates in a year-long internship, allowing students to gain practical experience within their chosen specialization area.
The Dual Degree Program in Subject Matter Education (S.M.E.) provides graduates with a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree in their field of study (English, History, or Spanish), a separate B.A. degree in Education, and New Jersey teacher certification (Certificate of Eligibility with Advanced Standing). The Program includes the New Jersey state-mandated full year of clinical practice (student teaching).
The Teacher of Reading Endorsement leads to certification as a Teacher of Reading. It is available to students who have already been admitted to teacher certification programs or who already hold New Jersey teaching certificates. Reading certification is granted only when a student has fulfilled all requirements for an initial teaching certificate.
This program consists of undergraduate coursework and leads to the Teacher of Students with Disabilities (TOSD) Endorsement. The post-baccalaureate is available for those enrolled as an undergraduate in one of the College of Education’s initial endorsement programs or to those who currently hold a bachelor’s degree and are eligible for at least a certificate of eligibility (CE) in elementary education, early childhood education, subject matter education, or physical and health education.
This program is designed for those who possess a standard New Jersey Instructional Certificate or CEAS (Teacher of Health and Physical Education) or are currently enrolled in a health/physical education teacher prep/certification program in the State of New Jersey, and who wish to earn New Jersey Driver Education Teacher Endorsement. The content includes learning to teach motor vehicle operation and within driving environments, as well as the student development of teaching techniques emphasizing safety, risk perception, and decision-making processes applied in a vehicle. Learning how to instruct others in performing behind-the-wheel driving will be scheduled outside of class time.
